Wildland Team
The Mesa Fire Department (MFD) Wildland Response
Team was established in 2002. The team has
responded to several major wildland fires including
the Rodeo/Chediski in 2002, California Cedar Fire in
2003, and the Cave Creek Complex Fire in 2005.The
team consists of 20 members that are National
Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Red Card
certified. The membership is divided into 3
teams with an Engine Boss (NWCG certified) as the
leader of each team. Each Engine Boss is
Incident Command 4 (ICT4) certified with extensive
training in firefighter safety and wildland tactics.
The Wildland Team is also a member of the Central
Arizona Wildland Response Team (CAWRT) that
participates in annual refresher training and
responds frequently as a Task Force to wildland
fires in Arizona. Last year the team responded
to 6 wildfire incidents, including the February Fire
near Payson and the Warm Fire in the Kaibab National
Forest.
The program provides several benefits to the City
and MFD. The experience and lessons learned on
wildland incidents are implemented to the MFD
interface stations each year during refresher
training. The City of Mesa is reimbursed by
Arizona State Land and the Federal Government for
labor and apparatus costs while assigned to a
wildland incident. The City also receives cost
recovery for covering the positions that are vacant
while those personnel are deployed at an incident.
