Training Programs:
Quarterly In-Service Training
All firefighters must attend a four hour
out of service training session at the
Training Facility each quarter. Training is
provided on a variety of suppression and
suppression-support subjects.
Driver/Operator Certification
This program is offered to firefighters who
complete their probationary year and to incumbent
firefighters who desire to promote to engineer. All
firefighters must complete this program within three
years of their hire date. Certification is valid for
a three year period. The program consists
of self
paced packet of study materials, road and apparatus
driving skills, pumping skills and a written exam.
Specialized Workshops
Several times a year selected training workshops are offered at the Training
Facility. These
sessions are on specific topics such as hazardous material,
tactical workshops, or
ladder
company proficiencies. Instruction is provided by the Training staff, as
well as Chief officers
and guest speakers.
Chief Officer Training
The department provides in-depth training for chief officers. The training
is conducted at the
Training Facility and is designed to keep the officers
current on new policies, procedures and
training programs. There is hands-on
material, including simulator work. New training programs
to be introduced at
the battalion level are presented at these sessions in the Train-the-Trainer
format.
Minimum Company Standards
Minimum Company Standards evaluations are
conducted once a year. The standards
require
that each Engine and Ladder Company
perform several evolutions and tasks within a
time standard. Benefits that can be
gained thru the MCS process are:
- Crews have the opportunity to make drilling a priority.
- Individual performance can be evaluated by company officers.
- Tasks not routinely performed will be practiced.
- Command officers will have an
accurate gauge to evaluate how much time a
task
could take on the fire ground.
- Chief officers can evaluate crew
consistency.
Each Battalion Chief is required to
evaluate their battalion.
